Scriptures On Pride Tell Us To Let It Go

Nothing Separates Us From God More Than Pride!

Pride is one of the seven deadly sins and to me the deadliest of them all.  We are all guilty of it while not even realizing it.  How often do we convince our selves when can handle a situations when we are over our heads?  How often we turn down help when it was offered to us?  Instead of turning to God, we turn to ourselves and separate our selves from him rather than becoming closer.  It is such a sneaky sin that Satan has used it to lead us away from God through existence.  So because of this we need to seek the scriptures on pride and turn to God’s grace and understanding.  We need to understand what pride is and how our Lord views it so we can make true changes in ourselves and be pleasing before the Lord.

What Is Pride?

In essence pride is is about having a high opinion or value in one’s self or a particular achievement.  Here are some definitions for pride:

  • a feeling or deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one’s own achievements, the achievements of those with whom one is closely associated, or from qualities or possessions that are widely admired.
  • the consciousness of one’s own dignity.
  • the quality of having an excessively high opinion of oneself or one’s importance.

In really short terms pride can be view as a form of being  self centered.  As we will find, this is on contradiction to God’s word and his righteous direction for us.

So What Do The Scriptures On Pride Tell Us?

As many of you have probably guessed, God is not a big fan of the sin of pride.  Especially since….

for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” ~ Romans 3:23

So if we have all sinned and failed before God, should we really be full of pride?  Guess that is why it is a sin. Pride is a contradiction to God’s love and plan for our lives.  It keeps us from putting him first in our lives.  If your are looking for proof of this, read of to see what the scriptures on pride have to say about the topic.

Pride Is About Selfishness, Not God And Others

Pride is all about putting ourselves and our wants before others.  Whether it is selfishness, conceit, arrogance, and it’s many other forms, pride is a contradiction to God’s word and prevents us from truly loving others and being of service.  Paul said this when writing to the Philippians:

Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves;” ~ Philippians 2:3

Notice it is not just treat others as yourself but as more important that ourselves!  This indicates the polar opposite of being prideful.  This was the example set by Jesus our Savior when he came to serve and sacrifice himself on our behalf.

God Will Judge Us For Our Pride-fullness

It is obvious that God does not think much of our pride and our own opinions of ourselves.  In fact he will deal with our pride issues when our time of judgement comes.

For the LORD of hosts will have a day of reckoning Against everyone who is proud and lofty And against everyone who is lifted up, That he may be abased.” ~ Isaiah 2:12

And why wouldn’t our Lord judge us when he has clearly told us to be humble and serve other.  Would not our own parents do this with our selfish behavior?  We must learn to love and help others and realize that the world does not revolve around us.  Even the Son of Man came to serve and not be served.  If Jesus, the Son of God, was soo humble, how much more humble should we be?

Pride Leads To Dishonor While Humbleness Leads To Wisdom

When we let pride in we dishonor ourselves before the Lord.  This is clearly stated in Proverbs:

When pride comes, then comes dishonor, But with the humble is wisdom.” ~ Proverbs 11:2

You can’t have wisdom if you are full of pride, it is that simple.  You must humble yourself to gain the wisdom of God.  So again the scriptures on pride continue to be clear and consistent to us.

God's Grace

God Grants Grace To The Humble

So again we continue to find the same consistent message throughout the old and new testaments.  We have to be humble, not proud, to gain the grace of God.

But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.”” ~ James 4:6

And Grace is so critical in our relationship with our Lord.  If pride keeps us from God’s grace then it affects our salvation:

For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;” ~ Ephesians 2:8

Grace is a gift from God, plain and simple, and we can not gain it ourselves except though being pleasing to him.  So pride, which is all about ourselves, can never gain us the promise of eternal life through Jesus.  It is simply the fast track to our separation from our Lord.

Our Lord Will Exalt The Humble Not The Proud

We have the choice of allowing ourselves to be proud or humble.  Are we all about ourselves or devoted to our Lord as his faithful servants?  We can see what pride gains us, dishonor and judgment, while being humble gains us wisdom and grace.  One path separates us further from God, the other draws us closer to him.  We can clearly see the scriptures on pride tell us to avoid our selfishness if we wish a positive relationship with our Lord.  I’m not sure about you but I want to be exalted by my Lord.  So let go of your pride and humble yourself before our Lord.

Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord , and He will exalt you.” ~ James 4:10

Now that you have chosen to let go of your pride, time to pickup your cross and follow Jesus!
